When I was a kid I was intrigued by this painting by Shona McFarlane
Wreath bird flying (1984) Shona McFarlane
Maybe I was familiar with these birds due to a family quirk where we often visited relatives – in cemeteries. McFarlane writes “I painted the bird attached to its twist of rusted wire. I set it loose and gave it flight after all those years threaded into its place inside its glass cage“.
While carrying on the family tradition, I found one of these (now rare) birds myself. All I did was lift a wire mesh cage off it, the glass dome long gone. I couldn’t even bare to ‘pose’ it a little and am quite horrified that McFarlane stole the bird for her painting (grave robbing!). Still I think it came out ok.
